3/7/2024 0 Comments Logitech harmony remotes![]() See, my gear is remotely located in a closet, so a good control system is pretty important to me. Bottom line is that, while I can't complain too much, I was "slumming it" in the area of remote controls. Now, I lost my remote control system in a lightning storm, along with just about anything that used Ethernet or HDMI.It was a mess. You get this beautifully-shaped device, but it also has a new 2.4" color touch screen that lets you press and swipe.and it has vibrating haptic feedback for the buttons, so you know your command was recognized. This new WiFi-meets-cloud-based software is their best yet, and it's only fitting that the company revamped its remotes as well to bring them up to speed with the expectations of our smart-phone-toting society. Reliable? Not so much back then, but then Logitech added RF capabilities and IR repeaters, and things got much better. Then you tell it what inputs you use for what, and you're off to the races. You just added your devices and set up activities based on the gear you use. They controlled everything, and they did it without you having to program every single button. But the strength of the Harmony brand of remotes was always the extensive database of AV equipment. Harmony busted onto the scene several years ago and was bought up by Logitech who then advanced the ergonomic design of the products and made them look a lot cooler. This is the Logitech Harmony Ultimate and the Harmony Smart Control. With a few minor exceptions, there hasn't been much movement in the residential remote control market. Maybe Logitech had another web outage on their Harmony-sites.We haven't reviewed a remote control in quite a while, and there's a good reason for that. The day after it worked, don't know why though. It's a bit unclear, as the Create Account-button on mhgui at first didn't do antyhing. You also may, or may not have to do this on a Windows-computer. ![]() You may need to create an account first on, but after that, it should be pretty straight-forward. I've had some initial succes with using Congruity by installing mhgui on my Kubuntu-workstation. Testing the now freshly updated remote, it worked like a charm!. ![]() After saving the second file, I ran Update.EZHex with Concordance and waited for wizard to finish. Now the second file showed up for downloading!.So I checked ther guide again and figured I should run the Connectivity.EZHex with Concordance anyway. When reading the guide in §4 again, I still couldn't figure out where my second file was.I tried Firefox instead and behold, the first file was downloaded and I waited for the second, but it never came. When downloading the firmware files, I initially used Google Chrome but nothing was saved. The guide in §4 suggests to install some further packages, so do that. The guide specifies Ubuntu 15.10 64-bit.You should now be set, but the guide in §1 doesn't tell you how to use Concordance.Install Concordance # apt-get install concordanceĬheck to see if remote is detected # concordance -i -v I won't go into details, just add comments to parts where I got stumped.Ībove site is gone. Supposedly there was a GUI availble too, but I never bothered. With the help of my friend Google I was able to find a guide to set up the firmware customizing using a Ubuntu terminal. I recently bought a new media device and needed to set it up with the remote, so now the need was greater than ever! Moving Windows XP to a VirtualBox instance on my current Kubuntu computer worked, but I was never able to make the remote connect to the virtualized Windows XP environment. ![]() However, Windows XP is long since end-of-lifed and the Logitech Harmony software never worked properly with Windows 7. I used the remote and the accompanying special Windows software to configure it time and again. I've had a Logitech Harmony universal remote for years now, in fact I've had one since Windows XP was the newest thing on the block.
